Frequently Asked Questions By Owners Of New Or Leased Vehicles

  • Will the paint match?

    We use PPG paint systems in all of our repairs.  A lot of cars made today are painted with PPGs automotive line right from the factory.   We take the paint code from your vehicle and enter it into a state-of-the-art computer program which provides us with the exact match for your vehicle.  We mix the paint on a specifically calibrated scale allowing us to be absolutely precise with our mixture. 

  • How long will it take to repair my vehicle?

    It depends on how much damage we are repairing.  The industry standard to repair a vehicle assumes four hours of touch time per day.  That means our technician should spend no less than 4 hours a day repairing your car.  We use the Audatex repair estimator program to estimate damage and how many hours it will take to repair your car.  Insurance companies also use this program or other programs like it such as Mitchell, etc.  From the estimate, we read the total number of hours to repair and divide it by 4 in order to determine the number of days it will take to repair your vehicle.  For example; if the estimate says it will take 10 hours for a repair, it should take us no more than 3 days to return your vehicle to you.  This is an average and at H&M Collision, we strive to get your vehicle back to you as soon as possible; and on average we beat the standard!

  • Will you use original OEM parts to repair my vehicle?

    We will use OEM if you request it, if the insurance company authorizes it, or if we cannot get the part through aftermarket means.  We mostly use CAPA parts to complete repairs.  The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) is a non-profit organization established in 1987 to develop and oversee a test program guaranteeing the suitability and quality of automotive parts.  CAPA tests replacement crash parts to make sure they fit, perform and last the same as the originals. Only those that meet the industry’s toughest standards earn the right to be called CAPA-Certified replacement parts and carry the CAPA Seal.  The insurance companies require us to use CAPA certified parts if available.

  • I have some scratches in the paint; can I buff it out or does it require paint?

    If the scratches are in the clear coat (top surface) we can generally buff them out with a little compound.  However, if the scratches go through the color coat and or down to the primer or  metal, it will need to be painted.  There are several stages to the PPG paint system, but in short it includes sanding the area to a feather edge, building back the level with primer surfacer, block sanding, sealing, paint and clear coat.

  • When can I wash and was my newly painted vehicle?

    PPG recommends no wax or polish for the first 90 days.  This includes silicone-containing waxes or polishes. This will allow the finish to fully dry and harden.  For the first 30 days, PPG recommends not using a commercial car wash.  When you wash your vehicle, you should wash with cool water using a very mild car wash soap.  Be sure to use a sponge or soft cloth.  Also, wash your vehicle in the shade, never in direct sunlight.  Also in the first 30 days:

    • Never “dry wipe” your new finish—it can scratch the finish
    • Try to avoid extreme heat or cold…always try to park in the shade
    • Don’t drive on gravel roads
    • Don’t park under trees which could drop sap or near factories with heavy smoke fallout
    • Trees attract birds and bird droppings are very acidic—watch out
    • Do not spill gas, antifreeze, ATF, brake fluid, or washer fluid.  If you do spill, rinse with cool water immediately—DO NOT WIPE!
    • Do not use an ice scraper to remove ice from the painted surface
  • Is there a warranty?

    Yes.  Most repairs come with a lifetime warranty.  As long as we adhere to PPGs paint system specifics, PPG will reimburse us to repair your car at no cost to you.  To ensure we are applying PPGs system correctly, all of our painters are certified by PPG to use their products correctly, which guarantees a lifetime warranty.  After repairs, if you start to notice a problem, bring it back immediately so that we can plan for repairs and prevent further damage.

  • Do you offer headlamp polishing?

    Yes!  Over time, your headlamps will get scratched and pitted by the sand and debris found on the roads.  Colorado uses magnesium chloride to de-ice the roads; unfortunately, it deteriorates the outer surface of your headlamps if not rinsed off in a timely manner.  Of course the sun, especially in higher altitudes, will also haze or cloud your head lamps.  In any regard, we have a procedure which will remove most if not all of the haze and clouding, restoring your headlamps to near new condition.
